How many nights.

A short note on the length of a Maldives stay — and why the answer is rarely the one travellers expect.

Almost every first inquiry to avé arrives with the same question: how many nights should we stay?

The honest answer is longer than most travellers think.

The travel arithmetic

The Maldives is a long flight from anywhere. Most European guests arrive after fifteen hours of travel. North American guests after twenty. The first day is rarely usable as a holiday day — it is a recovery day, spent unpacking, drinking water, and sleeping at unfamiliar hours.

The last day is also partial — most flights leave Velana in the evening, and the seaplane back must be timed against it.

That leaves the middle. A five-night stay yields three proper days. A seven-night stay yields five.

The rhythm of an atoll

Maldives houses move slowly. Breakfast is long. The reef takes an hour to walk. Lunch is two. A spa appointment, properly held, fills an afternoon. There is no rushing the day — the country does not permit it.

Five proper days is the minimum at which the rhythm of a resort begins to settle. Seven is where the second week starts to feel possible.

A short Maldives stay is not the Maldives. It is a brochure of one.

The two-atoll journey

For first-time guests with ten nights or more, we usually compose across two atolls. The first house — closer to Velana — for the welcome week. The second — further south, often Baa, Noonu, or Laamu — for the second. On our register that often means COMO Cocoa Island to begin, then Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru or Six Senses Laamu for the proper week.

The transfer between them is a private seaplane or a shared inter-resort flight. It costs more. It also produces a journey that feels less like a hotel stay and more like a country visited.

What we recommend

For a first visit: 7-10 nights at a single house. For a honeymoon: 7-10 nights, with a strong case for the longer end. For a returning guest, or a longer holiday: 10-14 nights across two atolls, with one of them in the outer south.

Less than five nights and the journey is almost always a missed one.
