Muli

Two surf breaks off a single Meemu island, a dolphin channel offshore, and a southern town that still moves to the fishing day.

Operated by avé, end to end

Muli, at a glance.

Drawn around two right-handers off one working town — the southern surf, cleaner and emptier than the Malé passes, with its own airstrip since MMXXV.

The island, in full

Muli sits at the eastern edge of Meemu atoll, two hundred kilometres south of Malé — far enough that the swell that powers the Kaafu breaks usually arrives here a little cleaner, a little longer. The island is unusual in that two real surf breaks sit within reach of the same harbour: 'Muli Inside', locally called F1 for its speed, is a long fast right that walls up on a southwesterly swell; 'Muli Outside' — Mushrooms — sits further out and reads gentler, with longer rides and a more forgiving section. The rest of the island is working Meemu. Muli is the atoll capital, so there's a council office, a small high school, the harbour where the tuna boats unload in the late afternoon, and a tea-room that holds the evening hour. The channel off the eastern shore is one of the most reliable dolphin coasts in the country — pods of spinners along the boat in the late afternoon, and an 85% sighting rate that's quietly held by local boatmen rather than advertised.

For surfers who want the breaks below the central atolls — Muli Inside (F1) and Mushrooms reachable from the same lagoon, on an atoll capital that's still genuinely a working town.

The Southern Surf · the journeys we compose

Two breaks, one lagoon.

Muli holds what almost no surf island can — two real waves reachable from its own shore.

  1. avé pick

    3days

    The Two-Break Days

    intermediate

F1 and Mushrooms from the island itself — the dawn paddle to the inside wall, the outside point when the swell fills, and a guide who reads which of the two owns the morning.

Prerequisite · Comfortable on reef waves at head height

  2. 3days

    The Outer Points

    advanced

The named points within a fifteen-minute boat — Boahurra, Mulee Point, Veyvah Point — surfed off a held dhoni with nobody else on the peak. The southern atolls' quiet argument.

Prerequisite · Advanced surfer · solid reef experience

  3. 2days

    The Flat-Day Water

    no surf required

For the company of surfers, or the swell's days off — wing-foil and SUP on the lagoon, the dolphin channel at dusk, and Meemu's named reefs (Shark's Tongue, Veyvah Thila) for divers and snorkellers.

  4. 5days

    The Southern Surf Week

    the full season

The whole Meemu register drawn against the forecast — both home breaks, the outer points, the flat-day lagoon, and the town's working rhythm holding the evenings. The south, before the crowds find it.

What the island holds.

The named days of Muli, each held privately. Open one to read it — add it in the composer below.

  • Surf · SignatureF1 · the inside wallDawn & dusk sessionsMar–Nov

The wave the locals named for its speed — a fast, barrelling right that walls up on a southwest wind and runs shallow before its kind exit. Paddled from the island's own shore; no boat, no queue.

    Prerequisite · Intermediate and up

  • SurfMushrooms · the outside pointBy tideMar–Nov

The outside right that catches more swell — long tubing walls with an easy exit at the corner, the rest-day wave that keeps getting promoted to the main event.

  • SurfThe outer points by dhoniHalf dayMar–Nov

Boahurra, Mulee Point and Veyvah Point within a quarter-hour's boat — the named rights of the southern atolls, surfed with nobody to share them.

Meemu's eastern channel is quietly one of the country's most reliable dolphin coasts — spinner pods along the bow most evenings, held at the golden hour.

  • DiveShark's Tongue & the kandusTwo-tank morning

Meemu's named register — the reef-slope "dormitory" where grey reefs and silvertips stack on the incoming current, and the Mulaku Kandu drifts that almost nobody else dives.

Prerequisite · Open Water · drift experience for the channels

  • DiveVeyvah ThilaSingle tank

The gentle pinnacle off the neighbouring island — five to twenty metres, mild current, and the photographer's favourite hour in the atoll.

    Prerequisite · Open Water

Wing-foil, e-foil and SUP on the lagoon's glass — the flat day turned into its own discipline, kit and coaching held at the surf house.

Tuna off the afternoon boats, grilled at the harbour edge with the town finishing its working day around you — the atoll capital's honest table.

The standard

Operated, not just booked.

A guesthouse on Muli is a different kind of luxury, not a budget compromise. This is how we hold it.

  • Vetted houses & operators

Every guesthouse, guide and boat is one we have used or inspected. We operate nothing we would not put our own guests on.

  • A guide who is yours

Not a group tour — your own host on the island, who knows the families, the captains and the reef, and holds the day to your pace.

  • Rooms held to a standard

En-suite, air-conditioned, the board you chose — the room secured in your name before you fly, never left to chance on arrival.

  • Transport, handled

Speedboat, ferry or domestic flight, aligned to your arrival window. The connections are ours to arrange, not yours to chase on the dock.

  • Safety, not left to luck

A local contact through the journey, an emergency line, and the standards we hold every operator to — on the water and off it.

  • One ledger, one payment

A single, clear price and one payment for the whole journey — not a dozen guesthouse bookings settled in cash on arrival.

How we hold every journey

The shape of a day

How the day holds.

  1. 5.45

    The dawn paddle

A short walk to the eastern point and out to F1 before the wind comes up — the cleanest hour of the day.

  2. 9.00

    Breakfast at the harbour

Mas-roshi and tea at the harbour café; boards leaned against the wall; the tuna boats just returning.

  3. 12.00

    A walk through the town

A slow loop through the village — the council office, the small market, the tea-room at noon.

  4. 15.30

    A dolphin run

A short boat into the channel offshore — spinner dolphins along the bow, sometimes a long pod, a quiet half-hour at sea.

  5. 17.00

    A second surf

Mushrooms in the late afternoon, when the wind drops and the swell finds its evening shape — longer rides, gentler walls.

  6. 20.00

    Supper on the sand

Grilled tuna, a long table set near the harbour, an early bed before the next dawn paddle.

Plan the trip

When to come, and how.

  • The surf season · Mar — Nov

The southeast swell runs long and clean this far south — the home breaks work most of the season, and the points fill on the bigger pulses. West and southwest winds groom it.

  • The peak pulses · Jun — Aug

The season's biggest swell — F1 at its fastest, the outer points at their best, and the safety ski earning its keep. The advanced surfer's window.

  • The quiet water · Dec — Feb

The swell softens and the island returns to the fishing day — the lagoon's glass months for foiling and the reefs at their clearest. The surf house breathes.

Field notes

  1. F1 (Muli Inside) is one of the country's faster walls and is best at a head-high southwesterly with a light north wind. Mushrooms is the rest-day wave — longer rides, gentler sections.

  2. Meemu's eastern channel is held quietly as one of the country's most reliable dolphin coasts — local boatmen report ~85% sightings year-round. avé holds a private boat at the late-afternoon hour when the pods are most active.

  3. Muli is the atoll capital, so the day has a civic shape to it — the council office, the working harbour, the small high school — that the resort-shadow surf spots in Kaafu don't carry.

  4. Muli's own airstrip opened in 2025 — a thirty-five-minute hop from Malé on the scheduled days, with the board bag walked from the apron to the guesthouse. The speedboat remains the honest road and arrives in three hours.

Muli is the rare local island you can now fly to. A new airport opened on the island itself in 2025, and Maldivian flies the short hop from Malé in about thirty-five minutes — the schedule is still settling and the seats are few, so we confirm the day and fare for you before we hold one. By sea it is a speedboat of roughly two and a half to three hours, arranged through the house; the public ferry is cheaper and slower, and we book that the same way.

This is the reason most travellers come. Mulaku Kandu, the atoll's great channel, runs a drift past soft-coral pinnacles thick with grey reef sharks, eagle rays, barracuda and trevally — a current-fed site we keep for divers who can manage it. Mantas gather at the channel's cleaning stations through the southwest monsoon, while the drier months turn the corner over to the sharks; a full day in the water sits around US$60–90, and we set the rhythm of dives to the season.

There is, and it is unusual for a local island in the central atolls. The break called Muli is a right-hander, friendly enough for intermediates yet with sections that draw in and hollow out, best on a southeast swell through the southwest monsoon. We draw the surf days around the tide and the wind.

It depends on what you are chasing. For calm water, beach days and diving, the dry months from about December to April are the easy season. For surf the rhythm flips — the southwest monsoon, roughly May to October, brings the swell — so we shape the stay around whichever brought you.

No — Muli is an inhabited island and, like the local islands, it is dry. If a glass of wine matters to your evenings, the way is a cruise or a resort visit in the wider atoll, and we can fold that into the days; on the island itself the pleasures are simpler ones.

Muli is a living Muslim community, so the courtesy through the village is covered shoulders and knees, with swimwear kept to a designated stretch. Because the island is small and quietly emerging, we confirm exactly where that line falls with the house before you arrive rather than promise a beach we cannot place for you.

The atoll's channels are generous beyond the reef. Half-day snorkelling runs from around US$25–40, night and sunset fishing roughly US$30–50, and the surrounding channels are a reliable place to find spinner dolphins. Sandbank picnics and island-hopping fill the slower afternoons; we keep the prices loose and confirm them with the house.

Muli is tiny — about a kilometre and a half end to end, walkable in an afternoon — and the houses are few. We tend to draw two to four nights here, long enough for a couple of channel dives, a surf or a fishing evening, and the unhurried feel of a working island that has only just opened its door.
