Soneva Jani is the Maldives at its most theatrical. The villas — water reserves of three and four bedrooms — sit over the lagoon at Medhufaru in the Noonu Atoll, fifty minutes north of Velana by seaplane. Each has a retractable roof above the bed. Each has a slide from the upper deck into the lagoon. Each has a private outdoor cinema.
It should be too much. It is, somehow, exactly right.
The villas
Twenty-four water reserves, plus a small handful of island reserves on the connected sand island. Each water reserve is its own production: a master bedroom that opens to the stars, two further bedrooms, a long deck, a private pool, a kayak, a paddleboard, and the slide.
The smallest is the One Bedroom Water Reserve. The largest is the Four Bedroom Water Reserve with Slide — a 1,200-square-metre platform that comfortably sleeps eight and feels like a private island in itself.
The island reserves are less photographed and quieter. They suit guests who prefer the grounded feel of beach living. The famous Soneva moments — the slide, the retractable bedroom roof, the outdoor cinema in the lagoon — belong to the water reserves.
The Soneva codes
Soneva houses are run on the Soneva codes — no news, no shoes — and the codes are taken seriously. Footwear is removed on arrival and stored. Devices are encouraged to stay in the villa. The pace is held at Sonevan speed, which is roughly the speed of an unhurried child.
The codes work because the staff have been with the company a long time — the average tenure at Jani is one of the highest in the country.
The Soneva slide is the moment Jani is known for. The Sonevan code is the reason guests return.
The dining
Eight restaurants, including the famous overwater Cinema Paradiso — dinner at the long shared table, a film projected on the screen over the lagoon. The Director's Cut menu changes weekly. Booking is held by your butler.
The kitchen is more consistently excellent than most travellers expect from a house this theatrical. The wine cellar is one of the best in the Indian Ocean. The chocolate room — yes, a chocolate room — is open to guests at all hours.
The reef
The house reef is good, but Jani's strength is the wider Noonu reef — particularly the manta cleaning stations and the southern dive sites. The dive team is unusually experienced. We brief which weeks are best for the marine life on a per-journey basis.
The week
A Jani week is rarely quiet, but it is reliably composed. Mornings on the reef. Afternoons in the villa pool. Sundown drinks on the upper deck. Cinema dinners three evenings of the week. The slide, every day, more than once.
For honeymoons, the One Bedroom Water Reserve is sufficient. For families, the larger reserves with slide are usually right. Couples after a quieter register usually look to Patina Maldives instead — a different house entirely.
Begin a letter and we will hold a Jani week through our standing relationship with the GM — including the favours the brochure does not list.
