The island, in full

Dhigurah means 'long island' — a thin sliver of land in South Ari, hemmed by a generous lagoon and looking out at the South Ari Marine Protected Area. The MPA is one of the few year-round whaleshark sanctuaries in the world. Mornings here begin with a boat: out to the channel, where the long shadow of a whaleshark gives the day its shape. In season, manta cleaning stations fold into the same morning. Back on the island, the long sand-spit on the south end runs for nearly a kilometre before it narrows to nothing — a quiet place to walk, sit, swim.

For the traveller drawn to the marine register — whalesharks year-round, mantas in season, and the country's only protected pelagic corridor.

The Gentle Giants · the journeys we compose

A giant, met quietly.

Dhigurah sits inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area — one of only two places in the world where whalesharks hold year-round.

    2days

    The Whaleshark Mornings

    snorkel · no certification

Two mornings on the MPA line with spotters who have read this reef for years — the slip into the water from the ocean side, the long shadow alongside, the code kept to the letter. Honest odds, most mornings kind.

  2. 3days

    The MPA Dive Week

    certified divers

South Ari's named sites from the island's own channel — Kudarah Thila's four coral heads, Broken Rock's split canyon, and the whaleshark drift along the Beyru. Currents are real; so is the register of fish.

Prerequisite · Open Water · Advanced recommended for the thilas

  3. 3days

    The Manta Season

    May–Nov

When the southwest monsoon turns the water green with plankton, the cleaning stations on Dhigurah's side fill with reef mantas. Three days drawn to the season — stations in the morning, the lagoon's slow afternoons.

Prerequisite · Open Water for the station dives · snorkel option held

  4. 4days

    The Long Island Slow Week

    the island itself

For the company of divers, or for the week after the week — the three-kilometre beach walked end to end, the sand spit at low tide, a single shark morning, and nothing else with a clock on it.

The excursions

What the island holds.

The named days of Dhigurah, each held privately. Open one to read it — add it in the composer below.

  • Water · SignatureThe whaleshark line · Maamigili Beyru3–4 hours · morningYear-round

The outer-reef drop where the giants cruise the surface line — spotters up top, the quiet slip in from the ocean side, three metres kept from the body and the path never crossed. The country's surest meeting, honestly held.

  • DiveKudarah ThilaTwo-tank morning

The protected pinnacle in Dhigurah's own channel — four coral heads rising from thirty metres, swim-throughs, and a density of fish that made its name. Current brings it alive and asks experience in return.

Prerequisite · Advanced Open Water recommended

  • DiveBroken RockSingle tank · by current

The mid-channel thila split clean by a swimmable canyon — walls of soft coral either side of the crack, eagle rays overhead, and the current to read on the way through.

Prerequisite · Advanced Open Water recommended

  • DiveThe manta cleaning stationsMorningMay–Nov

Dhigu Thila and its neighbours in the green months — reef mantas holding over the coral heads while the wrasse work. Divers hang at the edge; snorkellers read it from the light above.

  • LandThe sand-spit walk2 hours · low tide

The island narrowing to a bare kilometre of sand at its southern tip — walked at low tide with the lagoon on both hands, as close to a private island as a public one gets.

  • LandA resort day · LUX* South AriHalf day

The neighbouring resort held for an afternoon — pool, spa and a long lunch across the water, with the boat back before the village supper. For the day the island feels too honest.

  • SandbankThe sandbank picnicHalf day

A bare crescent off the MPA line, reached between shark passes — linen, a chilled lunch, and the long swim back to the boat.

  • WaterBig-game fishingHalf dayMarlin Nov–Dec

Trolling the outer water for tuna and, in the late-year window, blue marlin — the working ocean read from a sport chair, released or brought to the evening fire as the law and the day decide.

The standard

Operated, not just booked.

A guesthouse on Dhigurah is a different kind of luxury, not a budget compromise. This is how we hold it.

  • Vetted houses & operators

Every guesthouse, guide and boat is one we have used or inspected. We operate nothing we would not put our own guests on.

  • A guide who is yours

Not a group tour — your own host on the island, who knows the families, the captains and the reef, and holds the day to your pace.

  • Rooms held to a standard

En-suite, air-conditioned, the board you chose — the room secured in your name before you fly, never left to chance on arrival.

  • Transport, handled

Speedboat, ferry or domestic flight, aligned to your arrival window. The connections are ours to arrange, not yours to chase on the dock.

  • Safety, not left to luck

A local contact through the journey, an emergency line, and the standards we hold every operator to — on the water and off it.

  • One ledger, one payment

A single, clear price and one payment for the whole journey — not a dozen guesthouse bookings settled in cash on arrival.

How we hold every journey

The shape of a day

How the day holds.

  1. 6.30

    The morning channel

A small boat out to the MPA; the long, slow shadow of a whaleshark; the swim, held quietly.

  2. 10.00

    Manta cleaning station

In season, a second drop — the cleaning station, the mantas at the rocks, a slow drift back.

  3. 13.30

    The long sand-spit

A walk south along the sand-spit where the island narrows — the lagoon either side, the wind in the palms.

  4. 16.30

    The house reef

Snorkel from the beach; a turtle, perhaps; reef fish in their afternoon stations.

  5. 20.00

A supper on the western shore

The sunset side; coral-grilled tuna and an early bed — the next morning starts before light.

Plan the trip

When to come, and how.

  • The giants · Year-round

The South Ari aggregation holds in all twelve months — the search side of the reef shifts with the monsoon, and the early boats are the kind ones. We draw the mornings accordingly.

  • The clear season · Dec — Apr

Calm seas, glass visibility, the comfortable crossings — peak season on the island and the easiest snorkelling of the year. The mantas thin out toward the west.

  • The green season · May — Nov

Plankton thickens the water and the mantas answer it — the cleaning stations on this side fill while the visibility softens. Rain crosses in short arguments; the rates ease.

Field notes

  1. The South Ari MPA was declared in 2009, and is among the few places where whalesharks aggregate predictably year-round — early morning sightings are the most reliable.

  2. Mantas at the cleaning stations follow the lunar cycle; new and full moons through May to November give the highest counts.

  3. Local dive operators here observe a strict code — no touching, no flash, distance kept. avé holds only operators who keep to it.

  4. The sand-spit at the southern tip shifts visibly with the monsoon — what is dry in March may be lagoon in October.

From Malé rather than the airport pier. A direct speedboat is the usual way across — roughly two hours, from around US$50 to US$70 each way, with a morning and an afternoon run that we book ahead for you. Those in a hurry can fly to Maamigili in about twenty minutes, from around US$170, then finish by a short boat. In rough seas the speedboat may stand down and the flight becomes the steady choice.

Whale sharks. Dhigurah sits inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area, one of the few places on earth that holds a resident population the year round — local boats report finding them more often than not, in any month. It is big-fish snorkelling on a guesthouse budget, the reason most travellers choose it over the quieter islands.

There isn't really a wrong one — the whale sharks stay all year, which is the honest headline. If you want calm water and clear visibility, the dry months of about January to April are easiest for travel and for seeing far. If you want the most whale-shark activity on the eastern reef, the wetter southwest run of roughly May to November — busiest around August to October — tends to deliver. We draw the days to suit whichever you're chasing.

Yes — Dhigurah keeps a designated bikini beach, often counted among the longest in the Maldives, where swimsuits are at home. It is a living Muslim community, so through the village the courtesy is covered shoulders and knees. The island is long and thin, and the house will point you to the marked stretch.

Dhigurah is a dry island, so no alcohol is sold or served in the village. A short boat crossing reaches a nearby resort where you can have a drink, paid there on the day — we arrange the hop when you'd like it. There is no local floating bar here; the resort is the way.

The signature day is the whale-shark snorkelling safari, the priciest of the trips at from around US$80. Beyond it run manta and reef snorkels, dolphin and sunset cruises, line fishing, and a slow visit to the island's own long natural sandbank at the southern tip. The diving nearby is world-class — Kuda Rah Thila and Manta Point among the names — and the dive centres will quote their own rates.

Two or three nights at the least, and three or more if you can. That leaves room for a whale-shark morning, a second water excursion, and unhurried time on the long beach and sandbank — without packing the days. Guesthouse rooms run from around US$70 a night, moving with the season.

Bring cash. There is an ATM at the north end and US dollars are widely taken, but cards often aren't accepted at the small restaurants and shops. A tourist SIM from Dhiraagu or Ooredoo is best picked up at the airport on arrival — choice is thin on the island. Everything is walkable; Dhigurah is a few kilometres long but only a couple of hundred metres wide, so no transport is needed.
