The Retreat
JOALI sits on Muravandhoo island in Raa Atoll — one of the largest, deepest atolls in the country, well north of the capital. Seventy-three villas thread the shoreline and the lagoon, each one a small composition of artisanal objects, curated bookshelves and quiet design. The house calls itself an "art-immersive" island, and means it: commissioned installations and visiting artists are part of the daily walk, not a wing off to the side. The day moves between four pools of attention — the water, the spa, the studios, the table. Saoke floats above the lagoon as a Nikkei homage by Noriyoshi Muramatsu. Vandhoo crosses Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean and the Levant in one room. Mura Bar holds a whiskey-and-cigar lounge inside it. La Joie sweetens the afternoons for children. Destination Dining will lay a table on a sandbank, or in a Manta Ray treehouse, if you ask. Wellbeing is by ESPA — sauna, steam, hammam, vitality pool, fitness room with ocean and jungle views. The Muramas Kids Club leans into storytelling and cookery, and the marine programme runs from snorkelling with manta rays to chartered dhonis.
A house for collectors of light, art and slow afternoons.

The Island
Where the villa categories sit — sunrise or sunset side, the jetty, the kitchens, the quiet ends of the beach. As the retreat itself draws it.
The Residences
The full register at JOALI Maldives — drawn from the simplest beach house to the held estate. Pull the rail to read each in turn.
A handpicked palette of art, automation and a quiet bathtub — the entry point to the beach side of the island.
A separate living room, a long pool and the slow geometry of garden, deck and sea.
The simplest float — a single bedroom, a long infinity pool and an ocean that doesn't end.
A separate living room over the lagoon — the everyday version of floating, with room to spread out.
A residence-sized suite for the western light — a long deck for the hour the water turns metallic.
A separate living room and two bedrooms drawn for a family — under one roof, with privacy held intact.
An infinity pool for the sea and a garden pool for the rest of the day — built for families that travel together.
A family-sized water villa with a living room between two bedrooms — the lagoon version of being together.
Three bedrooms on the sand, a pool and an outdoor cabana — a quieter alternative to the four-bedroom flagship.
Two living rooms, two infinity pools, a private spa, steam and sauna — and an on-call dhoni at the jetty.
A two-storey beach house for ten, with butler, library and buggy — the jewel sits on its own stretch of sunrise sand.
Dining Experiences
From the signature room held by a single chef to the long-lunch beach kitchen — the dining experiences at JOALI Maldives are drawn for the hour of the day, not the page of the menu.
Designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu — sushi, sake and teppanyaki on a floating pavilion above the lagoon.
The all-day room — long breakfasts, hand-picked wines and a kitchen that travels across three regions in a sitting.
Nonna-approved pasta, a Bellini at the start and grappa at the end — Italy held in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
A table set on the sand under lit palms — plates that read as travel, the most rooted of the rooms.
Cabanas on the white sand by day; a whiskey-and-cigar room tucked inside for after dinner.
An artisanal sweet shop — fruit, chocolate, vanilla — held back for children and the adults who pretend.

Wellbeing
Hammam, vitality pool, and an ocean-facing fitness line — the wellness register run with ESPA, set into the same considered architecture as the rest of the house.
Experiences
What the retreat actually does well beyond the villa line — with its own schedules and price lists where it publishes them. Every experience is arranged through your correspondent.
The centrepiece of the house — visiting artists in residence, with Glithero and Misha Kahn among those who have worked the island into their pieces.
A Noriyoshi Muramatsu room — the architect of Nobu Tokyo and Zuma — where the cuisine and the architecture were commissioned as a pair.
One of the largest and deepest atolls in the country — manta-ray snorkelling and chartered dhoni excursions are a defining part of the programme.
A working retail studio — teas, textiles, and one-of-a-kind pieces straight from the Art Studio.
The Shape of a Day
A sketched register of one day at JOALI Maldives — the hours we tend to compose around. Yours will be drawn for the company you keep.
Raa's horizon from your own deck — breakfast arrives with the light.
The gallery first, then whatever the visiting artist has underway.
JOALI Spa's Turkish register, then the vitality pool until the light softens.
Muramatsu's room over the water — architecture and dinner as one commission.
Occasions
The house calls itself the joy of living, and occasions are taken in that key — an anniversary drawn through the gallery, dinner at Saoke held private, the vow on the sand with the art programme's eye for staging.
Bespoke Insights
The particulars a brochure would miss — the small notes we keep on this retreat, drawn from the journeys we have composed here.
Art is structural here — the JOALI Art Studio & Gallery is the centrepiece, and visiting artists like Glithero (London) and Misha Kahn (New York) work with local artisans on site-specific installations.
Saoke is a Noriyoshi Muramatsu room — the architect behind Nobu Tokyo and Zuma — so the cuisine and the architecture are commissioned as a pair.
The Muramas Kids Club programmes around storytelling: local raconteurs tell Maldivian tales, and there's a kid-friendly kitchen for cookery classes.
Maison de Joail is a retail studio inside the property selling teas, textiles and one-of-a-kind pieces from the Art Studio — a working gallery, not a souvenir shop.
Raa is one of the largest and deepest atolls in the country — manta-ray snorkelling and chartered dhoni excursions are a defining part of the marine programme.
