Every Maldives journey resolves into the same question, asked the moment a guest steps off the international flight at Velana: seaplane or speedboat?
The answer is rarely about preference. It is about geography, time of day, and the patience of the traveller after a long flight.
The geography
The Maldives runs north-to-south across nearly a thousand kilometres of ocean. Resorts within thirty minutes of Velana — most of North and South Malé Atoll, Bandos Maldives and COMO Cocoa Island among them — are reached by speedboat. Resorts beyond that distance — Soneva Jani in Noonu, Joali in Raa — are reached by seaplane.
There are exceptions. A handful of houses in Baa, Lhaviyani, and Vaavu run private speedboats over distances that would normally be flown. But as a rule: under thirty minutes, boat. Beyond, plane.
What each costs
Speedboat transfers are usually included in the room rate, or charged at $150-300 per person, return. Seaplane transfers run $500-800 per person, return, and are operated by Trans Maldivian Airways or Manta Air on shared aircraft.
Private seaplane charters are available. They cost roughly $10,000-15,000 one-way for a six-seater. We arrange them, but rarely recommend them — the shared flights are short, scenic, and almost always punctual.
The small calculation
The decision is almost always made by the flight arrival time. Seaplanes do not operate after sunset. If your international flight lands after 3pm, the seaplane will not fly that day — you will overnight in Malé and continue the next morning.
This is the single piece of timing we ask every guest to check before booking the international leg.
A seaplane is not a transfer. It is the country's introduction to itself — twenty minutes above the atolls, with the reef visible the whole way.
What we recommend
For a first visit: arrange your international flight to land in the morning. The seaplane out is the better introduction to the Maldives than the speedboat. For a returning guest who knows the country: speedboat is simpler, quieter, and significantly cheaper.
If the resort sits on the boundary — a sixty- to ninety-minute speedboat — we usually prefer the boat. The trip is part of the journey.
Begin a letter and we will arrange the transfer alongside the rest of the journey, with the timing held against your flight schedule.
